Brain

Once again, caught in a limbo zone waiting for someone else to make a decision. For me, convenient if they’d just go ahead and decide. For them, no particular hurry. Seems to happen a lot in life.

The secret to handling such occasions, patience. The trouble is, an extra day or two seems nothing to them but a lot to you. Over the extra day or two, a lot of opportunities to pick up the phone, chivvy things along. Thus making everyone jittery. Better to use your energy elsewhere, leave things to happen in their own sweet time.

No better occasion for getting on the motorcycle. The open road, the humming of the engine, the sense of gentle purpose. Simple situations to negotiate. Rhythms and priorities geared to minute by minute survival.

Today’s riding conditions taking the urgency from such survival endeavour. Sultry sky, cool turning later to warm, a long day ahead and containing summer’s special character of unendingness. The motorcycle cruising, oceans of power in reserve but no thought of using it.

Heard someone arguing on the radio, maybe humans haven’t been so smart after all developing such oversized brains. Sure, an apparatus for computations brings advantages, but at what cost, it seems to spend a lot of its time making things more difficult, not easier. Shame it doesn’t have an off switch.

Yes, but if the brain doesn’t have an off switch, it needs something to channel its energies. Preferably something physical, half the problem with the brain is that it’s so much part of the body, you need to find something that engages both. Feels good to be on the motorcycle.

Today’s journey having only the sketchiest of destinations, easily jettisoned if fancy dictates. In fact, day like this, might be nice to head for the South Bank, get a newspaper, sit near the river with a cup of coffee, watch the day go by. Yup, motorcycle, let’s do that.
